Have an original pencil portrait of your favorite goat drawn in graphite, charcoal, or colored pencil!

Portraits are drawn on Arches Watercolor or Stonehenge paper using professional artist-grade archival materials and sprayed with a protective fixative to prevent smudging and fading. They are sized to allow for standard-sized matting and frames.

Reference Photo Tips

The better the reference photo quality, the better the pencil portrait!

For digital photos, the image should be in .jpg format and at least 300 dpi. Please use a resolution of 1280 x 1024 or higher if possible. Try to use at least a 400 mega-pixel camera or higher. Send the original photo without cropping or altering, since these things lower the photo quality.

The head should measure at least 2.5 inches from the top of the head to the bottom of the chin.

Posed shots with huge smiles can often look unnatural, so use casual, candid shots instead. These will result in a more intimate and interesting portrait.

Do not use the flash! The flash eliminates shadows that add depth and interest. Side lighting is the best. The photo should not be too light or washed out and the subject should be properly lighted without dark shadows hiding the subject.

Get down to your subject’s level to take the photo.

Please send as many photos of each subject as you can. If possible, take a few close-up shots of the face as well in the same pose to capture the smaller details. If a background or special item is to be included in the portrait, please include detailed extra shots of it as well. A brief description of the subject is also very helpful to capture personality.

Group portraits can be created from separate photos. It is best to send several images and preferably an image with all subjects in one photo so I can best judge the size relationship of each subject.

Points to remember when submitting photos:

  1. The clarity of the photo you chose makes a huge difference in the final artwork.
  2. Professional photos are usually copyrighted by the photographer and their use will require written permission. Keep in mind that candid, casual photos will probably result in a better drawing anyway!
  3. Choose a photo that highlights the unique character of the subject and just makes you feel good.
  4. If you are unsure, send me several photos and we can decide together which photo(s) will work the best.
  5. If you do not have access to a scanner and/or computer, places like Kinkos offer services for scanning and emailing your photos.
